Bukowski escribi\u00f3 una saga de novelas protagonizadas por su \u00e1lter ego, Henry Chinaski, en las que relata su vida con ciertos elementos de ficci\u00f3n. En 1982, el autor escribi\u00f3 acerca de su ni\u00f1ez y juventud, revelando los or\u00edgenes de su exc\u00e9ntrico comportamiento en la que es, probablemente, su obra m\u00e1s personal: <em>La senda del perdedor<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nacido en 1920 en el seno de una familia de clase baja, Henry Chinaski es hijo de un padre violento y delirante y de una madre sumisa. A medida que crece, debe soportar la discriminaci\u00f3n por su origen alem\u00e1n, las palizas constantes de su padre, la miseria de la Gran Depresi\u00f3n y la hostilidad de un mundo que se encamina hacia la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Poco a poco, su coraz\u00f3n se endurece como mecanismo de resistencia. El punto de quiebre llega cuando un caso de acn\u00e9 severo lo ataca, dej\u00e1ndolo marcado y a\u00fan m\u00e1s segregado; aunque Chinaski siempre fue un solitario, este aislamiento forzado termina por devastarlo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Con una prosa visceral, simple, seca y directa, Bukowski nos muestra una faceta distinta: ya no es el alcoh\u00f3lico que elige la soledad por gusto, sino el ni\u00f1o herido que se reh\u00fasa a mostrar debilidad porque nunca se le permiti\u00f3 ser d\u00e9bil. El t\u00edtulo original, <em>Ham on Rye<\/em>, parece ser un gui\u00f1o a <em>The Catcher in the Rye<\/em> (<em>El guardi\u00e1n entre el centeno<\/em>); de alguna forma, Chinaski es un hermano paria de Holden Caulfield, aunque habitando un mundo mucho m\u00e1s s\u00f3rdido. Bukowski da voz a los perdedores, a los humillados y a los ofendidos. Es un trabajo menos literario que el de Salinger en t\u00e9rminos de simbolismo, pero no por ello menos significativo. Su enfoque es m\u00e1s realista, carente de met\u00e1foras complejas (como la vida misma), sin \u00e9pica ni m\u00fasica, habitando el silencio que el fracaso siempre trae consigo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Es un libro para todos los \u00abChinaski\u00bb del mundo, escrito con una honestidad que evita la autocompasi\u00f3n.
